Students Find Whimsy in Using Words

RANCHO CUCAMONGA - There are those who shiver at the thought of writing in a journal. They believe curling up with a good book is overrated. They drive by libraries wondering what's inside and why they're so popular.

But the 20 students who met at Los Osos High School in the last week of July were definitely not those students. These students are of a different ilk. They find whimsy and wonderment in words. They think spending five summer mornings in a lecture hall with like minded writers is fun.

This is the seventh summer writing camp led by Los Osos teachers Darcy Salvadore and Stephanie Elliott. The two are fellows of UC Riverside's Inland Area Writing Project and use teaching methods normally used on English teachers to teach much younger writers. The five-day course gives passionate writers a chance to hone their skills and dabble in fun exercises that the academic year wouldn't allow.
